New rice gene discovery could revolutionize crop growth and yield!
OsWOX3A in rice helps regulate the growth hormone gibberellic acid (GA). When OsWOX3A is overexpressed, plants become very short and have wide leaves, similar to GA-deficient mutants. Treating these plants with GA3 fixes the dwarfism. OsWOX3A reduces levels of GA20 and GA1 by interacting with a gene involved in GA production. The OsWOX3A gene is turned on by GA3 and turned off by a GA blocker, paclobutrazol. This shows that OsWOX3A is important for keeping GA levels balanced in rice plants.
