The goal of the study is to find the most cost-effective way to use renewable energies for a climate-friendly electricity supply in Europe and neighboring regions. The researchers explore different scenarios for creating a CO2 neutral electricity system under various conditions. The aim is to connect renewable energy sources in a network to meet the electricity needs of around 1.1 billion people, with an annual consumption of about 4000 terrawatt-hours.
