Plastic pollution is a big problem in oceans worldwide, with up to 90% of marine debris being plastic. A study in southeastern Australia found that 30% of seabirds and coastal birds had ingested plastic. Shearwaters had the most plastic in their stomachs. The plastic found was mostly dark in color and included manufactured plastics and industrial pellets. While the impact on body condition was unclear, some birds showed internal damage and blockages from ingesting plastic. More research is needed to understand the effects of plastic ingestion on birds in Australian waters.
