Plutonium Fuel Pellets Raise Concerns for Public Safety
The scientists at Savannah River Site are working on making fuel pellets using plutonium-238. They tested making 4 pellets and treated 3 others. They drilled a hole in one pellet after storing it for 2 1/2 months. They found that pellets made at Los Alamos had more cracks than those made at Savannah River. They also looked at different types of powder using special microscopes.
