Wastewater lagoon systems in Portugal are efficient and cost-effective due to low energy needs and simple operation. A study in Lisbon aimed to create design guidelines for these lagoons based on local wastewater and climate conditions. Results showed that lagoons are often designed with excess capacity, meeting discharge requirements for BOD but having higher TSS levels due to algae presence in the effluent.
