Inconsistent Tin Coating on Food Containers Raises Corrosion Concerns.
Tin plates used for food containers need a uniform tin coating to resist corrosion. A study found that commercial tin plates may not have consistent tin layer thickness. They tested 12 tin plate samples and found that the tin layer thickness varied, especially in free tin and hot-dipped plates. Electrolytic plates showed more consistent thickness. This suggests that not all tin plates have uniform tin coating thickness.
