Antibiotics Linked to Increased Nitrate Levels in Gut, Potential Health Risks Uncovered
Nitrate and nitrite, which can form harmful compounds, were studied in rats fed different diets and antibiotics. Rats given high nitrate had more nitrate in their stomachs and feces. Rats on high protein and lipid diets had no nitrate or nitrite in their intestines. When rats were given antibiotics with nitrate, more nitrate was found in their stomachs. In lab tests, nitrate reduction was affected by antibiotics, culture conditions, and medium type.
