British democracy tested in Great War civil-military debate over strategy.
During World War I, there was a big disagreement between civilian and military leaders in Britain about how to fight the war. The British Army suffered a lot of casualties, and everyone in Britain was affected by the war. The debate was about who should decide the war strategy and how much Britain should be involved in the fighting in Europe. Initially, British leaders thought the war would be short, but it turned into a long and bloody conflict. Lord Kitchener, who was in charge of the military, was seen as a great soldier by the public, but his decisions were questioned.
