The urbanization level in Eastern Uttar Pradesh has been increasing over the past century. The urban population has grown more than six times, from 6.70% in 1901 to 11.74% in 2001. The total population has increased by 262.97%, while the urban population has increased by 535.93% in 100 years. The number of large towns has also increased, with Class I towns now making up 54.61% of the urban population in 2001.
