Corticosterone therapy linked to reduced testosterone synthesis and altered testicular metabolism.
The researchers studied how removing the adrenal glands and giving rats corticosterone affected their testicular metabolism. They found that corticosterone reduced testis protein and prevented the loss of carbohydrates, while adrenalectomy increased anaerobic glucose breakdown. Corticosterone therapy decreased glucose oxidation and testosterone synthesis. These results suggest that adrenalectomy changes testicular glucose metabolism, and corticosterone may lower glucose use and testosterone production in the testes.
