New study reveals hormone's surprising impact on kidney and liver growth.
Luteinizing hormone (LH) can affect organs outside the reproductive system in mice. A specific LH preparation stimulated kidney growth in male mice. Removing the pituitary gland caused a bigger decrease in kidney size than other gland removals. The LH preparation helped restore kidney size and content in these mice. Other LH preparations and hormones did not have the same effect. Testosterone and LH isoforms can influence kidney growth in male mice. The LH preparation also reduced liver size and content in male and female mice. This shows that certain LH forms can affect the kidney and liver in mice.
