Residents in informal settlements in Kisumu, Kenya face challenges due to lack of household sanitation facilities, leading to open defecation. To address this, communal sanitation facilities were introduced. Factors like location, maintenance, economics, and gender influence the use of these facilities. These factors should be considered in future sanitation interventions.
