Moso bamboo forests in China store more carbon than other forests.
Researchers estimated the biomass and carbon storage of moso bamboo in southern China using a special model. They found that the bamboo's biomass and carbon storage varied with age and diameter. In the study area, the estimated biomass and carbon storage were 88.23 and 40.45 Mg ha−1, respectively. By selectively cutting older culms, the annual yields of biomass and carbon were 14.07 and 6.74 Mg ha−1. Moso bamboo forests have a higher carbon sequestration capacity compared to other types of forests. This model can accurately estimate the biomass carbon of moso bamboo in southern China.
