Stormwater retention ponds are used to clean up stormwater runoff. Researchers tested adding a deflector island to improve pond performance. They used a physical model of a pond with different setups. Surprisingly, the island didn't help and actually made things worse by causing shortcuts. This happened because the model pond had sloping walls, which was new.
