Coastal waters around Ireland at risk of oxygen depletion due to stratification.
Water column stratification in coastal and shelf waters around Ireland can lead to low oxygen levels near the seabed due to limited mixing of oxygen-rich surface water. A strong correlation exists between bottom layer oxygen levels and the presence of stratification. A model was developed to predict oxygen distribution and estimate oxygen consumption rates during summer stratification. The likelihood of widespread oxygen depletion in Irish waters due to human activities is low.
