Coastal erosion threatens future beach attendance at Valras, France.
Coastal erosion is a big problem for beaches in the Mediterranean, where tourism is a major source of income. To help manage this issue, a video system was set up at Valras beach in France to monitor the coastline. By looking at how the beach has changed over 7 years and how many people visit, researchers found that erosion could seriously impact the beach's ability to accommodate visitors in the future. The study shows that breakwaters can protect the coast, but the beach's recreational capacity may still be at risk in the coming years.
