Stormwater detention basins can affect groundwater quality, especially in sandy areas like southern New Jersey. Samples from basins in Camden and Gloucester Counties showed higher levels of some ions and nutrients compared to background levels. However, concentrations of volatile organic compounds and pesticides were similar to background levels. Dissolved-oxygen levels in basin samples were lower than normal.
