TDOT's SR56 Bridge Upgrade Eases Traffic Woes and Boosts Safety
A bridge near Smithville, TN, built in 1949 needed to be strengthened to handle heavier traffic. Engineers analyzed the bridge and recommended upgrades to support larger loads. The goal was to prevent detours for heavy trucks and buses due to weight restrictions. The analysis included studying the truss structure and gusset plates to ensure the bridge could handle the increased weight. The findings showed that the bridge could be strengthened to support AASHTO LRFD HL-93 live load, improving its capacity for modern traffic needs.
