Greener Cities, Cleaner Lakes: Low-Impact Development Slashes Urban Runoff Pollution
Stormwater runoff in Lake Simcoe Basin is a big problem due to phosphorus pollution. Low impact development (LID) could help by reducing urban runoff and improving water quality. LID practices like green roofs and bioretention can lower phosphorus levels, even though some LID methods may increase phosphorus in the short term. A study at the University of Guelph is looking at how different LID techniques can reduce phosphorus loading in urban areas. They will test various LID scenarios in the East Holland Subwatershed to see which ones work best. The goal is to find ways to decrease phosphorus pollution in stormwater runoff and protect Lake Simcoe's water quality.
