Fluorinated greenhouse gases could be slashed by 95% at low cost, saving planet from catastrophic warming.
The article discusses how man-made fluorinated greenhouse gases, which are super powerful climate-warmers, have been increasing due to more air conditioning needs and the phasing out of harmful substances. Researchers looked at how much of these gases we're producing now and how much we might make until 2050. They figured out that we could cut over 95% of these emissions by mostly switching to safer alternatives. The cost to do this looks doable, with at least half of the cut being affordable at less than 20C per ton of gas reduced. By tweaking rules in the Montreal Protocol, a global agreement on ozone-layer helpers, we might be able to make big reductions in one type of these gases called HFCs.
