Radioactive waste decontamination breakthrough: safer disposal methods implemented at Savannah River
The Savannah River Site is working on removing and decontaminating high-level radioactive waste from storage tanks. They are using a process called in-tank precipitation to clean the waste and then turning it into borosilicate glass. The cleaned salt solution will be mixed with cement to create a wasteform called saltstone, which will be stored in surface vaults. This process helps to safely dispose of the radioactive waste and protect the environment.
