Presidential coalitions reduce parties' legislative independence and success, study finds.
Parties that support a presidential candidate often team up before elections, but this can affect their success in legislative races. A study looked at parties in Europe and South America from 1975 to 2010 and found that smaller parties do better in legislative elections when they run alone or lead a coalition with a presidential candidate. However, no parties benefit from joining a coalition. This shows that the strategies parties use in presidential races can impact their success in legislative elections.
