Reduced sediment sampling leads to increased uncertainty in river pollution sources.
The article evaluates how uncertainty increases when sampling effort is reduced in sediment fingerprinting. By analyzing the impact of fewer samples from sediment sources and rivers, the study quantifies the rise in uncertainty in estimating the proportions of sediment from different sources. Results show that reducing the number of samples significantly increases uncertainty, with slightly greater impact from fewer river samples compared to fewer samples from sediment sources.
