Maize and bean intercrop system boosts yields for small-scale farmers.
Researchers studied how different ways of planting maize and dry beans together, along with different fertilizer levels, affected crop productivity. They found that in the 2007/08 season, using the right amount of fertilizer led to the highest maize grain yield. The single row intercrop system with dry beans had the highest overall productivity for small-scale farmers. This system could help farmers grow more food efficiently and improve food security.
