New method predicts soil water retention for Vietnam's Mekong Delta.
Soil water retention is crucial for farming and the environment, but measuring it directly is hard and expensive. Scientists in Vietnam found a way to estimate soil water retention using simple soil properties like texture and organic carbon. They studied soils in the Mekong Delta and discovered that a specific soil property called plastic limit can help predict soil water retention, especially when the soil is wet. They created two types of functions to estimate soil water retention, and one type worked better than the other.
