Diverse plant communities thrive in forest-marsh ecotones, boosting biodiversity.
The plant diversity in the area between the forest and marsh in Changbai Mountain was studied to understand how the environment affects the variety of plants. The researchers found that as you move along the ecotone, the diversity of plants increases. The mature community in this area has the highest diversity compared to the forest. This is because the ecotone contains a mix of marsh and forest plants, as well as its own dominant species. Some of these dominant species have five times more individuals in the ecotone than in the forest. This shows that there are edge effects in this area, and the characteristics of the ecotone are closely related to the unique properties of the plants and the environment.
