Kapchagay Reservoir leads to significant decrease in ecological runoff downstream.
The Kapchagay Reservoir has impacted the runoff and ecological flow in the lower Ili River. After its construction, runoff decreased at upper and lower stations, with the reservoir causing over half of the reduction at the lower station. Runoff distribution became more uniform, but less stable over the year. Ecological runoff decreased and became more evenly distributed annually.
