The study compared coastal wetlands in Fujian Province in 2000 and 2009 using satellite images. Natural wetlands decreased by 44,296.6 hectares, while artificial wetlands increased by 31,583 hectares. Mangroves, paddy fields, reservoirs, ponds, and salt fields had lower retention rates. Wetlands were converted to non-wetlands and natural wetlands to artificial wetlands, leading to increased fragmentation. The main change was wetlands turning into non-wetlands, likely due to aquaculture and coastal development.
