Nitrogen application at 180 kg N·hm~(-2) is best for growing alfalfa in the lower Yangtze river region. It increases plant height, shoot number, leaf area, and shoot weight, leading to higher forage dry matter yield. The forage quality, like crude protein and digestibility, improves with higher nitrogen levels, while fiber content decreases slightly.
