The study looked at how a virus called WSSV infects shrimp. They infected Penaeus japonicus shrimp with WSSV and checked different body parts at different times. The virus first infects the gills or blood, then the intestines and heart, and finally the muscles and limbs. Interestingly, it does not infect the hepatopancreas.
