Wheat varieties with stronger drought resistance show promise for food security.
Researchers studied 942 types of wheat to see how well they handle drought when they are young plants. They found that some wheat varieties are better at surviving drought than others. The wheat with the strongest resistance to drought had fewer main roots, more secondary roots, and more tillers. Interestingly, how well wheat handles drought when it's young doesn't necessarily match how it handles drought later on. Also, the weight of the wheat grains and whether it's planted in winter or spring doesn't seem to affect its drought resistance at the seedling stage.
