Household size reduction drives urban expansion in Northwest China.
Urban areas in Xi'an-Xianyang, China have been expanding, with more land being converted from agriculture to urban use between 1988 and 2006. This change was driven by factors like smaller household sizes, which increased the need for land and materials, pushing the urbanization process forward. The study used satellite data to track these land use changes and identified the key socioeconomic factors behind them.
