New Discovery: Nitric Oxide Boosts Plant Growth and Stress Resistance
The researchers found that treating maize seedlings with a substance that releases nitric oxide led to an increase in proline levels. This was due to an increase in the activity of an enzyme involved in proline production and a decrease in an enzyme involved in proline breakdown. Treating the seedlings with a substance that removes nitric oxide had the opposite effect. The treatments did not affect another enzyme involved in proline production. Overall, nitric oxide helps maize seedlings accumulate proline by boosting its production and reducing its breakdown.
