High Calcium Diets May Decrease Absorption Efficiency in Growing Dogs
The experiment studied how dogs absorb calcium from different levels of calcium in their diets. Results showed that as dietary calcium levels increased from 0.8% to 1.4%, calcium absorption efficiency decreased but the amount absorbed stayed the same. On the other hand, when dietary calcium levels decreased from 0.8% to 0.5%, absorption efficiency stayed the same but the amount absorbed decreased. The ratio of calcium to phosphorus in the diet did not affect calcium absorption. Body weight gain, blood calcium levels, and AKP content in the blood were similar across groups with dietary calcium levels between 0.8% and 1.4%.
