Optimal cropping patterns in southern China prevent agricultural drought disasters.
Southern China faces seasonal droughts that harm agriculture. Researchers studied 13 meteorological stations from 1981-2007 to find the best crop patterns for different precipitation years. In dry years, potato-maize-sweet potato and winter wheat-rice-sweet potato are best in semi-arid regions. In semi-humid regions, winter wheat-rice-sweet potato is ideal. In warm and humid areas, potato-double cropping rice is best in Jiangnan, while triple cropping with drought-resistant crops like winter wheat-rice-sweet potato is suitable in the southwest. Triple cropping maximizes water and heat resources, with rice and upland crop rotation being key, especially in wet years.
