Manganese levels in Chengdu rice fields impact plant absorption and soil health.
Researchers studied the distribution of different forms of manganese in the soil and water of rice paddy fields in Chengdu. They found that the type of manganese present varied with factors like flooding time, soil properties, and irrigation conditions. The concentration of dissolved manganese peaked at different depths in the soil depending on the field and time of year. They also observed changes in the levels of oxide-bound manganese with water immersion time. The total manganese content in the soil was lower than the national average, indicating no manganese contamination in the studied fields.
