New study reveals origins of oil and gas in Qaidam Basin.
The researchers studied the Paleogene Lulehe Formation in the Qaidam Basin to understand its sediment sources. They analyzed heavy minerals, ZTR index, and lithic fragments to identify 11 sediment provenance systems. The sediments from Kunlun Mountain traveled the farthest, while those from Altun Mountain traveled the shortest distance. This information helps in dividing the provenance systems in the area and understanding the basin's tectonic evolution.
