High N rates on maize lead to soil pollution and yield loss.
The study aimed to find the best nitrogen fertilizer rate for summer maize to improve soil nitrate levels and winter wheat yield. Researchers tested different nitrogen rates on maize in North China and then planted wheat in the same plots. They found that applying 180 kg N hm^(-2) to maize resulted in optimal soil nitrate levels and highest wheat grain yield. This approach can help farmers use nitrogen fertilizer more efficiently and reduce pollution in the area.
