High NH4+-N Concentration in Landfill Leachate Poses Pollution Threat Under Saltwater.
Landfills in coastal areas without proper liners can leak ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) into saltwater. A study simulated NH4+-N movement in aged leachate and found it spreads horizontally more than vertically. Carbon substances move slower than nitrogen substances, with more carbon near the leak. NH4+-N is a key factor in leachate leakage from landfills.
