Fine particles in coal fly ash contain high levels of toxic heavy metals.
The researchers studied fine particles in fly ash from coal combustion to understand their size, structure, and metal content. They found that as particle size decreased, global particles decreased while non-global particles increased. Most fine particles had rough surfaces and could stick together. Heavy metals like As, Se, Cd, Pb, and Cr were more concentrated in particles smaller than 2.1 μm. Fly ash with high calcium levels absorbed more arsenic.
