Revolutionary Flood Control Model Enhances Coastal Basin Safety Levels.
A system was created to predict and control floods in coastal areas by combining reservoir operations with water level modeling. By studying a reservoir in Fujian Province, researchers found that adjusting reservoir discharge based on upstream floods and downstream tides can improve flood control. The water level in the tidal reach changes in a complex, periodic way due to these factors, so a model was developed to separate flood and tidal waves. This model helps adjust reservoir discharge dynamically to account for peak events and tidal trends, ultimately enhancing flood control measures downstream.
