The study compares old and new ways of looking at international institutions. Old institutionalism focused on formal rules, while new institutionalism considers behavior and international regimes. New institutionalism has three types: rational choice, sociological, and historical. Rational choice looks at expected outcomes, sociological at what's considered appropriate, and historical at how history affects institutions.
