Soil erosion is a big problem in mountains, leading to land degradation. Planting hedgerows of certain trees and shrubs on slopes can help prevent erosion. A study in southwest China found that hedgerows reduced soil loss during the rainy season by 97%. The soil that eroded had more nutrients than the topsoil. Keeping hedgerows can even create terraces over time.
