Toxic Nitrogen Pollution Surges in Hanjiang River, Threatening Drinking Water
The study looked at nitrogen pollution in the Hanjiang River. Water samples were collected and analyzed, showing that ammonia nitrogen levels were highest during floods, while nitrate nitrogen levels peaked during floods as well. Nitrite nitrogen levels remained fairly consistent throughout the year. Pollution levels increased from rural areas to downstream, with ammonia nitrogen mainly from domestic waste and livestock, and nitrate nitrogen from soil erosion.
