Study reveals how word class shapes mental lexicons in Chinese and English.
The study looked at how different types of words (like nouns, verbs, and adjectives) affect how our brains organize language. They compared how Chinese learners and native speakers of English think about words. The results showed that the type of word affects how we connect words in our minds, but not how we understand their meanings. As people learn a new language, they get better at connecting words that are similar in meaning. Nouns are learned quickly, verbs more slowly, and adjectives are in the middle. But all types of words get better at connecting words with similar meanings as language skills improve.
