Sea level changes transform Yanfu Plain, creating new land formations.
The Yanfu plain in North Jiangsu has changed over time due to sea level shifts since the Holocene period. In the early Holocene, it was a shallow sea, then old sandbars formed in the middle Holocene creating a lagoon and shallow sea. By the late Holocene, the area transformed into part of the Huanghuai Plain with lakes and marshlands turning into the Lixiahe plain, and a wide seashore plain formed in the east.
