New Rice Varieties Developed with Enhanced Nutritional Value and Yield.
Scientists identified 15 different alleles at the Wx gene in rice using special markers. They found six new alleles that had not been seen before. They then created 72 rice plants with different alleles at the Wx gene by swapping genetic segments between different rice varieties. The swapped segments varied in length from 2.2 cM to 77.3 cM, with an average length of 17.4 cM.
