Heavy metal pollution threatens Pearl River Estuary ecosystem and communities.
The researchers estimated the natural levels of heavy metals in sediments of the Pearl River Estuary. They found that copper, lead, zinc, chromium, and nickel had background values of 16.1, 21.9, 94.3, 69.3, and 30.3 μg·g-1, respectively. The sediments near the Pearl River outlets were more heavily polluted. Over time, heavy metal pollution increased due to human activities in the Pearl River Delta.
