The researchers tested different methods to make bio-hydrogen from corn stalks. They found that steam explosion pretreatment worked the best. Under the best conditions, they got the most hydrogen and broke down the corn stalks the most. The liquid end-products were mainly butyrate, acetate, and ethanol.
