New study identifies key chemical indices to assess rock weathering depth.
Weathering can weaken rocks, but certain chemical indices can help measure how much they've weathered. By testing different rock samples, researchers found that WI, WPI, and LOI are good indicators of weathering degree and depth, as they consistently change with time and depth. On the other hand, ALK, a, and b don't reliably show how much a rock has weathered, so they're not useful for this purpose.
